Radio advert animatic

This is my first attempt of an animatic for my radio advert. I made the animatic on Premiere, a program I am semi familiar with as I used it last year to create my coursework. However, by creating this animatic I have realised I have forgotten quite a lot of the tools. It is good that I have realised this now as before editing my real product, I can go and revise Adobe Premiere so that when coming to create my product I will not waste any time.

This is my radio advert animatic:

Animatic draft two

I have made another three drafts of my animatic. One sponsorship and two TV adverts. I took on board all comments that were said to me through my presentation thus my storyboard has had some changes made to it. The reason the animatics are still a draft is because I have not added sound to them yet. However, all of the timing is correct which will help me visualise what my three adverts are going to look and appear like. My next step after this stage is to add the sound to help me further visualise what my adverts will be like. Below is my three new animatic sequences:

Tv advert one:

TV advert two: in my original animatic I added in sounds of laughter and background noise. However, it was not copyright therefore I would not actually be aloud to use it on my advert. Therefore, in this animatic I have left the sound out as the sound will be made on the day of filming.

What I need: Prop list

To ensure I have all the correct props and equipment I am going to make a list for what I need for each one. Therefore, when coming to find or purchase props I will be able to as I would have already made a list.

For all of my adverts I will need:

  • Camera
  • Tripod
  • Voice recorder

TV advert one and two:
  • Male suits
  • Female dresses
  • Party decorations
  • Prom decorations
  • Champagne glasses
  • Camera (not a real one)
  • Table
The reason why I will need the same props, costumes and equipment for both TV adverts is that I am using the same actors and locations.

Sponsorship sequence:
  • Car
  • "Just Married" decorations
  • Wedding cake
  • Wedding decorations
  • Wedding dress
  • Suits/party dresses
All of these props are iconic of a wedding and therefore it is important I use them. In my audience survey, the majority said how they had attended a wedding in the last year and therefore the audience are aware of what a genuine wedding looks like. I am going to have to bring a wedding to life by relying on props to create a realistic presentation of a wedding.

Radio advert:
  • Voice recorder

TV advert two: further changes

What I need to change:

All of my scenes are in the actors home e.g. sofa, bedroom etc. However, I have decided to change this idea and use my already made scenes and actors from my previous TV advert. Therefore, I now need to re-do my storyboard and change the drawings.

Below is the dialogue I am using in my second TV advert. I think I might have to adjust and change this to ensure it suits my TV advert two.

Change of idea: TV advert one/two

One of the problems I am facing is with my first TV advert. The problem is that I am advertising two events but one of them is a seasonal event. The event is a Christmas party which I have realised is a problem because the advert will be played throughout the year therefore viewing a Christmas party in a different season it may not seem relevant. Therefore, I now need to look back to my survey and choose a different (popular) event. I still want to keep the camera shots, sound and editing therefore I could change the Christmas party to a birthday party. Or, I could not label the event and just use language such as "Extravagant parties for any occasion".

Another problem I am facing is that for my second TV advert I have realised that I have a low level with verslimultude. The reason for this is because my second TV advert is very different from the first. My second TV advert was supposed to be shot in different locations in peoples homes, and outside etc. However, after my animatic presentation I was given advice to change this idea slightly. The change is to link it to my first TV advert - to film the people who are in the first TV advert and film their personal opinions on the event, talking about the company. I think this is a good idea as all I need to change is the background of my shots but I can keep the same dialogue. This will create familiarity in my adverts because it is the same actors.

Therefore, these changes will now hopefully improve my idea. I am going to have to edit and change my storyboard in order to complete the idea.

Feedback from my presentation

Today I had to present my storyboard. The significance of doing the presentation is that I was able to express my ideas to the class. Before creating my storyboard and animatic I was aware that I may need to adjust some of the ideas that I had come up with. One idea that was stated as a problem in my one of my TV adverts is that I am displaying a Christmas party. The reason this may cause a problem is because all of the other events I am showing are not seasonal therefore incorporating the Christmas party may be considered a bit irrelevant. Therefore, I may need to change the event I am advertising. Although, the only aspect which makes my Christmas party seasonal is the props (mise-en-scene) therefore I could potentially keep the same camera shots and just change the mise-en-scene to a different kind of party e.g. a going away party or a birthday party.

By presenting my work I have also realised I am breaking the fourth wall in my media. This is because I am combining a slice of life style advert with presentation style advert. I think this is a good idea to do this because I want my protagonist to talk directly to the camera whilst an event happens in the background. Although, If I do not display this correctly it could cause my audience to be confused therefore I have to be careful.

Moreover, I also need to create a new animatic - with a new storyboard. For my next animatic I am going to include sound and a voice over and also think about time. This will help me visually imagine what my product will be like. I think by adding sound, it will help me work out if the sound and action will fit together well. Therefore, this will prevent me from using sound which I may not like with my action when coming to editing. Additionally, I was also told that I need to think about what my advert is going to sponsor. (In my previous blog) I decided that DownTown Abbey would be a good and effective program for my advert to sponsor. (explained in previous blog). Furthermore, I also came to the conclusion that for my second TV advert, it would be appropriate that I use the same actors and location.

Sponsorship advert - what I am sponsoring

I need to consider who my events planning company can sponsor. I am going to come up with three ideas which I might consider for my sponsorship advert.

ITV - Downtown Abbey

My first option which I am considering using for my event planning service to sponsor is 'Down Town Abbey' - the show is aired on ITV. I am considering using this as an option as the target audience is the same as my target audience for my service. This is good because my target audience are likely to watch this show and therefore will view my advert.

Channel 4 - Grand designs

My second option would be a program on channel four - Grand Designs. This is one of my options because the target audience are aimed at a higher class. Although, the age of the target audience is over 40 which makes it hard for my target audience to want to watch the show therefore it could become a problem.

BBC 3 - Big Fat Gypsy Weddings

An program which I am considering using is 'Big Fat Gypsy's Weddings'. I have chosen this as an option because the program is based around a wedding event. In my sponsorship sequence I am focusing on weddings therefore it will link in. However, the main issue I have with this is that the program is directed towards a lower social class, whereas I am targeting a higher class with more of a sophisticated look.

Overall, I have decided that Downtown Abbey will be the program I am going to sponsor. I have decided to choose this program because it has the same target audience as me.

Draft of animatic (presentation)

This is my first drafts of my animatic. Today I had to present my ideas of my storyboard and animatic. From presenting and closely analysing my storyboard I have realised that I need to change parts.

Points about my presentation - what I need to do

  • In my advert(s) I essentially break down the fourth wall. In my first TV advert I am combining presentation with slice of life making it a postmodern text.
  • I need to think carefully about locations
  • To increase the verisimilitude on second TV advert I could use the same actors and location as my first TV advert
  • Who am I sponsoring - who would I want my events company to sponsor

My current stage

I am currently at the stage where I am confident enough in my storyboards to begin to create my animatic. I feel satisfied with my overall storyboard idea's. However, I am aware that my idea may not be the same when my product is finished. I have began creating my animatic on Adobe Premiere which I am slightly difficult to use. Thus, I will need to ensure I familiarise myself with Premiere before it comes to the editing stage.

New sponsorship idea

I have changed my idea for my sponsorship sequence because (wrote in my previous blog) I thought it was too similar to one of my TV adverts.

Below is a brief outline of the storyboard of my sponsorship sequence. When actually creating my storyboard, I will go into much greater detail of camera, editing, mise-en-scene and sound.

The advert will be revolved around an after wedding party. The main people in the advert will be a man and women - the newly wedded couple. The rest of the people will be their friends. The reason I decided this was because in my audience survey I found out that my audience were familiar with wedding events and therefore I thought presenting the best bits from a wedding would appeal and attract my audience.

  • Long shot of everyone dancing – high angle
  • Mid shot of specifically a couple dancing (near a cake)
  • Someone makes a short announcements
  • Couple walk over to the cake
  • Close up of the cake
  • Mid shot / low angle of couple
  • Mid shot of behind the shoulders (middle of them) cutting the cake

Change of idea: sponsorship

From storyboarding my two TV adverts I have realised that my sponsorship advert is very similar to one of my TV adverts. I feel that this will cause problems for my audience as they will be less interested as they have viewed a very similar advert before. Therefore, I have decided to rethink and plan my sponsorship advert to ensure my audience will be engaged into the advert. I feel that realising this in early stages of storyboarding will help me prevent wasting time as I have realised the mistake and can now develop a new sponsorship sequence.

Radio advert script

Radio script (spoken by a male speaker)

*clinking of glasses* (signifiying beginning of speech) - I would just like to say thank you all for coming - and emerald events for helping create my dream event into a reality. If it wasn't for such an outstanding group of individuals, I would not be here, standing talking to you all today. Emerald events have helped with every single detail - the location, venues, theme and the small things like the unique decor and name cards." - (the protagonist) "To find out more information then email Emeraldevents@info.co.uk or dial 0800 833 939. Emerald events - making your dream a reality."

I chose a male speaker to say this because my protagonist (in all my other adverts) will be saying the ending part and I am targeting both male and females therefore I need to ensure I have included a male and female in the radio advert.

TV advert two: choices

People in my advert

As my target audience is mixed gender - I am going to feature both male and female. I am going to include different types of people in my advert so that it shows that the event planning team can cater for anyone and that the service is universal. The first actor will be a middle aged women - stereotypically placed in a kitchen casually. This is a significant location because stereotypically women are the cooks of the families. The next actor will be a young man - on a mid run. I have chosen for the man to be running as it shows he is sporty and I feel that this will engage my target audience. I am then going to include a young women who is in the location of a 'girly' styled bedroom - wearing a dress. I have chosen to do this because I think that making the girl look feminine will appeal to the younger female side of the target audience. I am then going to use an old person so that older people in my target audience will feel included.

I am going to use the same protagonist throughout my advert so that each advert is linked.

Speech:

First speaker "when I first contacted emerald events, I was unsure whether to leave all the arrangements to them.. second speaker "but after I gave them the idea of what I wanted and how I wanted it, they delivered a perfect event for me. third speaker "not only did emerald events deliver an outstanding event, but they go the extra mile by making sure everything is organised efficiently to prevent stress for the customer.. fourth speaker: "I would definitely go to emerald events again, I couldn't think of a better, more reliable and advanced team of people to plan an event up to a high standard" - all shots will be shot at mid shot

·                     There will then be a mid shot of the protagonist saying "for more information email.. or call... etc"

TV advert two: shot list

  • Long shot of protagonist introducing the company
  • Mid shot of women in the kitchen
  • Long shot of man running
  • Medium shot of man talking to camera
  • Long shot of man running off
  • Medium shot of girl on sofa talking to camera
  • Mid shot of protagonist
I am using a lot of medium shots as I feel that it is important for the audience to be able to look at and view the actors body gestures/language but also their facial expression. I want all actors to be looking excited and happy.

  • Mid shot of protagonist looking proud (as if she did the event)

TV advert storyboard one: choices

Choices for TV advert one and why:

Selling more of a lifestyle - using good looking locations and props. Also, I am selling happiness and the idea that dreams can come true. Will be presented through actors (facial expressions), sound of actors.

Presentation and slice of life combined - the actor will look at audience, talk directly at them but will also be showing real life action. I have been inspired by the Rimmel London (Kate Moss) advert where Kate goes between presentation to slice of life - allowing the audience to engage in her dialogue as well as the action.

Protagonist:

I have chosen my protagonist to be female. This is because my target audience is 56% female. I am aware that it is only a slight difference between male and female therefore by using the main actor as female I am ensuring that the majority of my target audience are appealed to.

People in my advert:

I am going to have a mix of people - females and males. This is because my target audience is a mix, and males are nearly as significant.

Ages of people in advert:

Young adults because this advert is mainly based on events such as prom and parties and young adults go to more events like this as it is seen as their 'prime time'.

Dress code:

I want my protagonist to wear a smart jacket and trousers. This is because I want the audience to think the actor is sophisticated which is significant because my actor is representing the company and will reinforce how the team are professional.

The dress code of the people in my advert will vary so that each scene will look real. For the prom scene, girls will be wearing dresses and boys in suits. For the birthday/Christmas parties people will be wearing smart casual wear. I am not going to dress my actors in lounge wear because my target audience is middle class.

Events I am advertising

  • Birthday and Christmas party
  • Prom
(These two were the most popular answers on my survey).
